William I. Mott Biography
William I. Mott is one of the most popular and richest Horse Trainer who was born on July 29, 1953 in Mobridge, South Dakota, United States. It was 1996. Woodward Stakes at Belmont Park was the final victory for Cigar.
Cigar continued his winning ways that year, including traveling more than 6,000 miles (9,700 km) to earn a victory in the inaugural Dubai World Cup in Dubai, United Arab Emirates with a purse of $5 million. During the season, Cigar matched the decades-old accomplishment of Triple Crown champion Citation by winning his 16th race in a row in the Arlington Citation Challenge. Cigar failed in his bid to break the record when he lost to Dare and Go in the Pacific Classic Stakes at Del Mar Racetrack.
On the July 28, 2007, ABC Sports broadcast of the Diana Handicap, Hall of Fame jockey and race commentator Jerry Bailey said Mott is generally regarded as the best trainer for racing on turf in the United States.
Cigar is owned by Allen E. Paulson and did not compete at the age of two. Under the direction of trainer Alex Hassinger, he made an unlucky debut in 1993, in a 6 furlong (1,207 meters) race on the dirt track located in California. After breaking his maiden just a couple of months later, the trainer switched to grass racing and the horse was to be mediocre at the best. The following year, the owner took Cigar for East Coast trainer Bill Mott and he granted him the first two months of the year on a break and then brought him back into racing by July. After some poor results the decision was made to give Cigar another shot at racing on dirt. On his first try in the race at Aqueduct Racetrack, he took the win easily.
From 1992 to 2007 Mott had won nine training titles during his time at Saratoga Race Course. He was in 2007 the Saratoga Trainer’s Title with 27 wins, which was his first win of this title at the “Spa” since 2001. He also has won the title 10 times at Belmont Park and 9 at Gulfstream Park.
In 1996, the team of Cigar, Paulson, Mott, and Bailey won the Big Sport of Turfdom Award.
