Shaquem Griffin was the son of Terry and Tangie Griffin on the 20th of July 1995, which was less than 2 minutes later than Shaquill. Shaquem was born suffering from amniotic band syndrome that affected the left side of his hand which caused the hands on the left side of his hand to develop fully. When Griffin was just 4 year old, the mother spotted himself in the kitchen trying to employ a butcher’s knife to cut off his own hand because of discomfort. His parents planned to have an amputation the following day. But, Griffin was able to play sports with his left hand. Shaquem along with his older twin brother Shaquill were both given soccer scholarships to the University of Central Florida (UCF) by the coach at the time, George O’Leary, with Shaquill refusing other offers like his dream team, the Miami Hurricanes, his dream team, to join Shaquem. Griffin played his entire college playing career at UCF and racked up the equivalent of 17 sacks, and 30 tackles with loss. The highlights of his career include an interception in the game against The Temple Owls and a fumble recovery that led to a touchdown against players from the Austin Peay Governors, both in the 2017 season.

On August 9, 2018, Griffin made his preseason debut against the Indianapolis Colts in CenturyLink Field, leading his team in tackles with six solo tackles and three assisted tackles. On August 30, 2018, he again led the team in tackles with four solo and three assisted tackles in the final week of the preseason against the Oakland Raiders. Griffin led the Seahawks in total tackles for the entire 2018 NFL preseason with fifteen, tied with fellow linebacker Austin Calitro.
