Roger Crisp is one of the most popular and richest Philosopher who was born on March 23, 1961 in Brentwood, California, United States. Crisp is originally from Brentwood in Essex. He began his higher education at St. Anne’s College Oxford in 1979 where he studied Literae Humaniores. Crisp was part of the first male cohort to attend this college, which had previously been all-female. He was instructed by Gabriele Taylor and Iris Murdoch. He began the B.Phil. in 1983. From 1985 to 1988, he worked on his D.Phil. thesis on utilitarianism.
His other major works include Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics translation and Routledge Guidebook to Mill on Utilitarianism. He edited the Oxford Handbook of the History of Ethics (2013).
Reasons and the Good (2006) is Crisp’s most important work. In it, he presents new approaches to the oldest ethical questions. Crisp’s central thesis is that normative ethics must address the question of what ultimate reasons underlie our actions. Crisp contends that moral concepts are not the best way to explain such reasons.
