Melina Almodovar Biography
Melina Almodovar is one of the most popular and richest Singer who was born on June 3, 1979 in Santurce, Puerto Rico. “La Chica de San Juan”, her 2003 album Rumba’s SalsaSoul Delight, became the title song. The album featured a mix of soul and tropical rhythms and used a Spanglish language that was developed with the influx Latinos to America. Almodovar traveled to the United States in order to promote it. Ramses Arraya, the percussionist of Editus in Costa Rica, asked Almodovar to perform on a new record he was releasing, “Corazon en Clave.” (Heart in Clave). She flew to Miami, Florida to record the song “Yo Soy la Rumba”, and was soon relocating to the area permanently.
In 2014, Melina Almodóvar and her production partner Cristina Moinelo entered into a collaboration with the local Community Redevelopment Agency to hold a regular concert series in Hollywood, Florida dedicated to Salsa Music. The venue of Arts Park at Young Circle had a stage and auditorium with enough space for families and salsa lovers and was selected as the venue. At the fifth event, in 2018, 10,000 people attended. The festival has become a staple in Florida and salsa fans attend this free event annually.
In Miami, Almodóvar became a sought-after performer, opening for artists like Tommy Olivencia and La Sonora Ponceña. She also performed with Larry Harlow. Her first single in Miami, “Yo Soy La Rumba”, was produced by her musical director Ramses Araya. This was the #2 single hit on tropical radio. Almodóvar established a residency in Miami every Tuesday night for nine years at Tapas & Tintos on Española Way in the city of Miami Beach. She also performed at the 100 years celebration of the city of Miami Beach and was awarded the Key to the City of Miami Beach in 2014 by Mayor Philip Levine.
Almodovar and Tito were the sons of Tito Puente (the well-known latin music expert “Rey del Timbal”), who had met in 2001 when she was performing at a Nashville club with her Orchestra. He had also sat in on her band. Tito was chosen to be paired with Almodovar on numerous shows after he moved to Miami. Tito asked Almodovar for the role of a female singer when he was searching for a singer to record “Mi Socio”, which is a remake from the 1965 song in “Tito Puente Swings-The Exciting Lupe Sings”. He had an arrangement made by his father. Almodovar and Tito have been a highly sought-after duo since then, touring the globe performing her father’s songs as well as their own. Salsa dancers around the world love “Mi socio”. Almodovar and Tito have both performed at New York’s Yankee Stadium. They also regularly perform at the Ball and Chain in Miami’s Little Havana, as well at the Calle Ocho Festival.
Almodovar began performing in Memphis at the age of sixteen with various bands, including blues, jazz and gospel. A group of University of Memphis music professors approached her to form a salsa band. She accepted and was provided with a list of classic salsa songs. Orquesta Caliente was the band that toured the South playing at festivals like King Biscuit Blues Festival or the Beale Street Festival. It was the first Latin-language band to perform on Beale Street and was nominated at the 1999 Grammy Awards for Best New Band or Best New Artist.
Almodóvar has been with her partner Kevin since meeting at Miami Beach in 2007. She has a deep love for animals and loves dogs especially Chihuahuas.
