Cait O'Riordan Biography
Cait O'Riordan is one of the most popular and richest Singer who was born on January 4, 1965 in Lagos, Lagos State, Nigeria. O’Riordan met Elvis Costello while he was recording the Pogues’ album Rum Sodomy & the Lash in 1985. They were married on 17th May 1986. Darryl Hunt, her former Pride of the Cross bandmate, was able to fill in for her at several shows on the 1986 U.S. tour. He then replaced her permanently on the King of America tour.
She co-wrote the track “Lovable” from that album, and wrote, co-wrote, and appeared on songs on Costello’s subsequent albums Blood & Chocolate, Spike and Mighty Like a Rose. O’Riordan and Costello divorced in 2002. In a 2008 interview with the Irish Independent, she denied ever having formally married Costello: “We weren’t married…It was a kind of Muslim ‘I divorce you’ kind of thing.”
In 2004, she joined Pogues’ guitarist Phil Chevron’s re-united band The Radiators; that year she toured with the Pogues for the first time in 18 years. She left the Radiators and was replaced in February 2006 by Jesse Booth, and went on to form a band of divorcées named PreNup with Hothouse Flowers guitarist Fiachna Ó Braonáin.
She was the first to be the singer of Darryl Hunt’s jazz group Pride of the Cross in 1983. Hunt originally wanted Wendy May from the Boothill Foot Tappers as the singer. O’Riordan told Hunt that he had originally planned to ask Wendy May of the Boothill Foot Tappers to be her singer. She laughed at him and suggested she should do it. The band told her she couldn’t sing at the audition. She sang the lead vocals on “Tommy’s Blue Valentine”, their single during her time with Pride of the Cross.
MacGowan invited her to join his newly formed band, Pogue Mahone in 1982. Before leaving in 1986, she appeared on two of the group’s albums, Red Roses for Me, and Rum Sodomy and the Lash. She also recorded several singles and EPs. She was also a bass player and sang “I’m a Man you Don’t Meet Every Day” for Rum Sodomy & the Lash. “Haunted”, the soundtrack to Alex Cox’s Sid and Nancy film, was her vocal performance. “Fairytale of New York”, the Pogues’ biggest commercially-successful song, was originally written by O’Riordan & MacGowan. However, Kirsty MacColl recorded the song with the female vocals. Costello and O’Riordan are mentioned in the lyrics of “Fiesta”, from If I Should Fall from Grace With God.
She acted in the 1987 Alex Cox film, Straight to Hell, as the singing dancehall girl Slim McMahon, and also in the 1988 Frank Deasy film The Courier.
